Australasia Gaelic Games launches Strategic Plan 2026 – 2029

Australasia Gaelic Games launched its Strategic Plan 2026 – 2029 at its AGM at Park Royale Hotel, Melbourne on Saturday 29 November.

The plan reflects the voices of Australasia’s volunteers, administrators, players and club officers, and sets out a clear path for retention and growth over the three-year period, ensuring Gaelic games in Australia and New Zealand remain vibrant, inclusive and sustainable.

The plan focuses on four key pillars:

  • People & Participation
  • Governance & Sustainability
  • Facilities & Resources
  • Community, Culture & Promotion.

Recently appointed Gaelic Games Victoria Australasia delegate Conor Hennessy said, “At the core of this plan is a simple truth: the GAA succeeds because of its volunteers. Their dedication upholds our amateur status and sustains our community spirit in Australasia. This plan builds on that foundation to support growth, inclusion and the long-term vitality of our games.”

AGG Chairperson Ned Sheehy believes the strategy reflects the organisation’s ambition.

“This plan builds on our strong foundation while looking ahead to the next generation of players and leaders. We want Gaelic games in Australasia to be seen not just as an Irish sport abroad, but as a vibrant, community-driven part of the sporting landscape here in the Southern Hemisphere,” he said.

Ned continued, “I want to sincerely thank everyone who contributed to bringing this plan to life, including our dedicated steering group whose guidance and commitment were invaluable.”

Australasia has one of the fastest-growing Gaelic games communities outside Ireland, with clubs stretching from Perth to Sydney and Auckland to Christchurch, and membership reaching over 5,000 in 2025.
